My journey from Brooklyn’s public housing to becoming a social-behavioural scientist and community advocate reflects the transformative power of purpose born from pain. After losing my nephew to gun violence while pursuing doctoral studies, I found myself simultaneously researching trauma while experiencing it firsthand—a uniquely powerful perspective that shaped my approach to healing.
This intersection of academic expertise and lived experience led to developing the “Trauma-to-Triumph Transformation Model” and advocating for policy change, culminating in the passage of Mel’s Law supporting families affected by violence.
My work demonstrates how women can transform personal tragedy into systemic change. By creating evidence-based, culturally-competent approaches to trauma healing and psychological safety in the workplace. I’ve helped organisations revolutionise workplace culture while developing resilient leaders.
This journey reminds us that our deepest wounds can become our greatest gifts to others when channelled into purposeful action.
